Belphegor
The prince whose office is the channel of sloth — running, in 2026, through the feed of every device you own.
Belphegor is named in the Catholic demonological tradition — classified definitively by the German bishop Peter Binsfeld in 1589, drawing on Aquinas and the older patristic teaching — as the prince of Sloth. His office, the tradition records, has always been the inflaming of disordered sloth in those who can be reached. The channels through which he is permitted to reach have changed across the centuries. The office has not.
A direct warning
The Sloth operation is the deepest and most patient of the seven. Belphegor — the prince of acedia, the spiritual weariness that loses the will to act — has been given the infinite scroll, the autoplay corridor, the 'just one more' that becomes the evening, the morning, the year. Sloth is not laziness in the small sense. In the older Catholic sense, acedia is the soul's specific refusal of its own greatness. The algorithm rewards that refusal at scale.
Scripture and tradition
"Go to the ant, thou sluggard; consider her ways, and be wise ... How long wilt thou sleep, O sluggard? when wilt thou arise out of thy sleep? Yet a little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to sleep: So shall thy poverty come as one that travelleth, and thy want as an armed man."Proverbs 6:6-11
"That ye be not slothful, but followers of them who through faith and patience inherit the promises."Hebrews 6:12
How the operation runs in 2026
The sloth operation is not abstract. It runs through specific, named channels — the recommendation engine, the targeted ad, the suggested account, the autoplay queue. These are the channels Belphegor now rides. The Catholic tradition does not require the algorithm itself to be conscious for this to be true. Folk and theological tradition has always understood that the channel is neutral; the rider is not.
Specific operations the reader will recognise:
- The infinite scroll itself. The platform that has no end and is engineered to have no end.
- The autoplay corridor that walks you from one video to the next without your consent.
- The 'just one more episode' that has cost you nights and weeks.
- The Sunday afternoon that disappears into the phone and leaves no trace.
- The creative project you have stopped working on because the scroll is easier.
- The prayer you have stopped saying because the morning notification got to you first.
- The friendship you have stopped maintaining because the algorithm filled the time it would have taken.
The diagnostic — signs the operation is reaching you
The site's standing threshold: two or more is "pay attention." Four or more is "act tonight."
- You cannot account for two hours of yesterday
- Your screen-time report has crossed a threshold that surprises you
- Tasks you used to do have stopped getting done without you deciding to stop
- You feel a low, persistent dullness more often than a high or a low
- Prayer or contemplation has grown harder than scrolling
- You reach for the phone before you reach for anything else upon waking
- Sunday afternoons disappear
The countermanding angel
The Catholic tradition pairs each Prince of Hell with the archangel whose office is the protective opposite. The Prince of Sloth is answered by Archangel Metatron — The Scribe who records what was done.
The traditional prayer of countermand:
Archangel Metatron, scribe of the highest court, record what I have left undone. Restore in me the will to act, the courage to begin again, the diligence Christ asks of His own. Where acedia has emptied my days, fill them. Where the scroll has consumed my hours, return them. Amen.A prayer of the countermanding tradition
The paired stone
The medieval lapidary tradition pairs each protective angel with a specific stone, and through the angel with the answering virtue. For Belphegor and the operation of sloth, the tradition's standing answer is Topaz.
The stone of clarity and right action. Marbodus records topaz as the stone that returns the wearer to the work they were given.

What to do tonight
The tradition's response is not abstract. It is direct, specific, and physical. Take these in order. Do not pick and choose.
- Look at your screen-time report. Read the number aloud.
- Identify the one platform that costs you the most time. Delete it for 40 days. The withdrawal is the protection.
- Set a single specific task for tomorrow morning, before any screen. Write it down tonight.
- Pray the morning prayer (any traditional morning prayer) before checking the phone tomorrow. Not after. Before.
- Carry topaz, or any clear yellow stone, for the duration of the 40 days.
- Restart one practice you have abandoned. Walking. Cooking. Calling your mother. Reading a book on paper. Anything that requires sustained, single-tasked attention.
The cultivation of the answering virtue
The Catholic moral tradition has always insisted that the deadly sins are not defeated by mere refusal but by the cultivation of their answering virtue. The Prince of Sloth is not defeated by simply not committing his sin. He is defeated by the deliberate, repeated, daily practice of Diligence (Diligentia) — the virtue that occupies the ground he would otherwise hold.
The 40-day working above is the beginning. The cultivation of diligence is the lifetime answer.
